What Is Diwali?

People perform Laxmi Puja on the main day of Diwali which is also called Deepavali. Diwali gives us a message that Light and kindness always win against darkness and injustice. This festival is celebrated not only by Hindus but Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and few other religion people also take part in it. It's a Cultural festival celebrated by the entire Hindu community in the late time of summer and starts of the winter season. Diwali is the time of doing lots of shopping and purchasing new and important things in our life like Homes, Cars, etc.

We are celebrating this festival for thousands of year ago since Satya Yuga (सत्य युग). On this day when Diwali's first time celebrated as the day of Lord Rama's hometown returns. He came back to his capital Ayodhya after spending his14th years as an exile. In this time period of 14th years, many incidents happen with him such as his wife (Goddess Sita) was kidnapped by the Demon King Ravan and a battle between Rama and Ravan started to rescued Sita Mata. This whole process from the birth of Lord Rama and returning to Ayodhya after defeating Ravan in the world's most rememberable battle ever called, Ramayana.

History of Diwali / Deepawali

There is a complete detailed book written by Valmiki and name as Ramayana. When Shri Ram ji returned to his home after 14 years, the public of Ayodhya celebrated this festival with lots of joy, happiness, and enthusiasm by lighting up the entire city, wearing bright and beautiful new dresses, making lot's of different type of sweets, and cleaning up their homes. Diwali is also called Diya Wali because people decorate their homes with the lights of soil made diyas which also called "Candles of Diwali festival." People start to clean up their homes, and offices and then they renovate and decorate it. There are lots' Facts about Diwali other than Rama's return to Ayodhya.

People believe that Lord Vishnu rescued Goddess Laxmi from the prison of King Ball in his Vamana avatar. So, people perform Laxmi Puja on this day. It's also fact that Diwali is the birthday of Goddess Laxmi. There is also a mention in holy books that Lord Krishna killed demon Narakasura on this day and that's why it's celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi just one day before Diwali. Another story abt Diwali in Mahabharata is that Pandavas returned to their home after 14 years of Vanvas and one year of "Agyatavas." Deepavali meaning in the Hindi language is "Deep" "Avali" means a "row of Diyas".

Five Days Of Diwali Festival: - 

Dhanteras - Day 1: Diwali is not a single day festival but it's celebrated for five days one after another and Dhanteras is the first day on the list. It's the day when most of the people start cleaning, renovating, and decorating their homes, and business offices. Dhanteras is the most famous day in the Diwali festival carnival to do the shopping and purchase new things. People wait for the day eagerly so they can buy Gold, silver, homes, cards, and start their new business.

Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdasi) - 2nd Day: -   

As earlier mentioned, this day is the celebration of Evil Narakasura's killing by Lord Krishna, Satyabhama, and Kali. This the 2nd day in the list of Diwali festival season. Diwali is the harvest celebration festival because it's the playing time for all the framers in India. This day is also called as Choti Diwali in some states like Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Karnataka.

Lakshmi Puja - The Actual Diwali Day - Day 3: - 

This the most important day of Diwali festival time as it's the Diwali itself. On this day, people wear new clothes and outfits, housewives decorate the home with cool Rangolis and Diyas. In the evening time of the day, all the family members get together and perform Laxmi Puja which is the most important part of Diwali Puja. Lord Ganesha along with Goddess Saraswati is also worshiped on this day.

Padwa / Goverdhan / Balipratipada - Day 4:- 

The very next day of Deepavali is called Goverdhan and on this day the main lady of the house performs Puja early in the morning. Significance of this day is the love and mutual devotion between the wife and husband. The husbands give thoughtful gifts or elaborate ones to respective spouses on this day. In many regions, newly married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals.

Bhai Duj / Bhaiya Dooji - Day 5:- 

The final day of the Diwali carnival is called Bhaiya Dooji. As its name defines, it's the day of brothers and sisters make their brother's choice's tasty sweets on this day and perform their brother's Puja. Brothers also give some lovely gifts to their sisters on this day. Don't get confused as it's not Raksha Bandhan festival but yes it is also the festival of brother and sisters special relation, love, and believe.
