Krishna Janmashtami 2020: The Story of Lord Krishna's Birth

Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a major Hindu festival in India and commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, who happened to be the eighth avatar or avatar of Vishnu, the supreme God of Hindus. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the eighth day of Bhadrapada month of Ashtami is celebrated as Janmashtami and will be celebrated on August 11, 2020 (Tuesday) this year.

It is believed that Krishna was born in a dungeon in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, on this day the clock struck midnight. Krishna is the God of love, tenderness, and compassion. Hindu mythology portrays him as a prankster, a gentle lover, a universal supreme being and a child-like god.

The stories and stories of the life of Lord Krishna are called Krishna Leela. According to legend, Krishna was born to the Yadav dynasty of Mathura at the house of Queen Devaki and her husband, King Vasudeva.

Devaki had a brother, Kansa, an oppressor who along with some other demon kings was terrorizing Mother Earth. Kansa had seized the throne of Mathura from his father, philanthropist King Ugrasena. Mother Earth took the form of a cow and with her plight went to Lord Brahma, the creator of Hinduism. Lord Brahma then called Lord Vishnu, who assured Mother Earth that he would be born as Lord Krishna to end this tyranny.

Kansa acknowledges that Devaki is also expected to take over the Yadav dynasty in hopes of marrying Yadav prince Vasudeva. When Devaki was getting married, those who told Kansa his fate told him that one of Devaki's children would end him. In his stupa, Kansa waved his sword and decided to kill Devaki. But Vasudev begged for his wife's life and promised to hand over Kansa after giving birth to each child, Kansa left her sister, and imprisoned Devaki and Vasudev, and ensured that Devaki's No child should survive. As soon as Devaki was born a child, Kansa struck the child's head against the prison walls.
However, on the night of Krishna's birth, as Krishna was born, a bright light filled the prison and Vasudeva woke up with a divine voice that directed him to take Krishna across the Yamuna and bring him to his beloved friend Nandraj's Leave with Head of the Gopa tribe. Nandraja and his wife Yashoda had also given birth to a baby girl that night, so Vasudev secretly took the infant Krishna across the Yamuna river, who was no longer in a state of calm, but was raging as if he were Ocean.
Then the giant serpent of Lord Vishnu, the giant multimillion snake, came and helped Vasudev to take Krishna safely across the river. Vasudev went to Nandraj's house and exchanged children. His heart was filled with deep sadness as if he had left a part of his soul behind. He goes back to jail with the changed child, who makes a loud noise as he lies next to Devaki. The guard informs Kansa that Devaki's eighth child is finally born.

Devaki pleads with Kansa not to kill the child, pleading that the prophecy must have been wrong as his son was to end Kansa, but to no avail. When Kansa tries to kill the changed child, it turns into the goddess Durga and warns her that her death has come to her kingdom, and will return to punish Kansa for her sins. That Kansa finds no peace and continues to think about her end, saying that he can kill her then and there, but Kansa had to be on time, and then the goddess vanished.

However, Kansa was certain that the prophecy could not be completely true that if his murderer had been born inside the prison, he would surely have killed him. With a little relief, Kansa eventually freed Vasudev and Devaki, and let them live in a separate palace. After a few days, Vasudev shared what had happened on the night of Krishna's birth, and though Devaki was depressed, he was relieved to keep his son safe.

A few days later, the news of the birth of Nandraj and Yashoda's son reached the state, people were revealing the unique twinkle in the child's eyes, how he was always happy and how the mere joy and happiness of his presence all around. It used to spread. Krishna was unaware of his fate, away from all the chaos in Mathura, in Gokul, with Nand Baba and his wife Yashoda, as his foster parents.
